Seppala's Dog Team on Railroad

Date of photo: 1908-1934
Location: likely western Alaska
From the Lomen Family collection, accession number 66-54-179

Notes: The musher on the left looks like Leonhard Seppala, a famous early Nome musher and one of the most important mushers to participate in the 1925 Serum Run. The railroads build around Nome for mining were mostly inoperative by the 1920s and 30s and were often used by many different types of vehicles, both motorized and non-motorized.
